The Aura Reader of Whitley Bay: A Six-Year Field Study
For six years, a parapsychologist documented the readings of a woman who claims to see energy fields around living things. The results have quietly unsettled the field.
From 2018 to 2024, a parapsychologist at a British university conducted what may be the most rigorous longitudinal study ever attempted of a single aura reader. The subject — a 54-year-old woman in Whitley Bay — claims to have seen colored fields around people, animals, and plants since childhood. The results were presented last month at a closed conference and have begun to circulate among researchers.
The methodology was straightforward but exhaustive. The reader was asked to describe the auras of 312 individuals over the six-year period — without any prior contact, in controlled settings, and often through one-way glass. Her descriptions were recorded, transcribed, and compared against the subjects' medical and psychological histories, which were obtained separately with consent.
The researcher's summary is cautious. 'There is no statistical basis to claim that what she sees corresponds to any known physical field,' the report reads. 'There is, however, a statistically significant correlation between the colors she reports and certain health outcomes that emerged in the years following the readings — a correlation I am unable to explain.' Specifically, subjects she described as having 'a green band, frayed at the lower edge' were diagnosed with cardiac conditions within five years at a rate roughly four times higher than chance would predict.
The reader herself is uninterested in the controversy. 'I don't know what it means,' she told a researcher. 'I never have. I just see it.' Skeptics have proposed a range of explanations — cold reading, confirmation bias, fraud — but the controlled conditions make the simpler theories difficult to sustain. The full study is expected to be published next year.
