In the 1930s, a young girl in Delhi claimed to remember her past life in Mathura. Her detailed recollections were so accurate that even Mahatma Gandhi took notice and ordered an investigation.
Shanti Devi was born in Delhi in 1926 and by the age of four began speaking about a previous life in the city of Mathura. She claimed her name had been Lugdi, that she had died giving birth to a child, and that her husband was a cloth merchant named Kedar Nath. The girl provided specific details about her former life including the layout of the house, the location of hidden money, and personal details about her former family. When Kedar Nath was eventually located, he confirmed many of the details the young girl had provided. A commission established by Mahatma Gandhi, including prominent journalists and politicians, accompanied Shanti Devi to Mathura where she correctly identified her former home, recognized family members, and recalled intimate details that only Lugdi would have known. The case remains one of the most thoroughly documented reincarnation cases in history and has never been convincingly debunked.
